A vegetable steamer will save some vitamins, but you will never get enough from fresh food. Our food supply is degraded.

When I steam vegetables, I also drink the remaining steaming water. It has vitamins in it. Tastes good.

it seems that fresh vegetables to eat is too heavy for my bowels, boiled vegetables seem to pass better

That makes sense, Stan. Raw food is harder to digest -- at least in the beginning. It also has a detox effect if you are not used to it. But, once you are accustomed to it, it becomes easier to digest, the detox finishes, and people say they feel very light and good. But it is not the right choice for everyone.
